Tonight I pushed myself out of my comfort zone and went climbing at Boulders in Cardiff. I had the best time! My friends Matt and Alun (who I used to work with) and Matt’s wife Hedy met me there for my first ever climbing experience. I’ve always wanted to try it but my low self-esteem always told me that I wouldn’t be able to do it so why bother.

This happens a lot with me. I want to do something but I let my lack of confidence stop me from even trying.

I arrived a bit early and Alun was already there. He took me to the reception area so I could sign up, pay and get a harness. The nerves were really starting to set in.

Matt and Hedy arrived shortly afterwards and gave me some climbing shoes to use. Apparently climbing shoes are supposed to be a bit snug and I tried to convince my toes that it wouldn’t be for long.

I’m climbing this?

We went to the first climb and I looked up. I shouldn’t have looked it. It was really high! Alun taught me how to tie an 8 figure knot so that I wouldn’t die!

Tie a knot… nailed it!

And then I was off! Alun belayed for me so I knew I was 100% safe. Him and Matt gave me pointers as I climbed and were great with encouragement.

Getting advice…

Soon I was halfway up the wall. I felt like I’d been climbing for days!

NAILED IT!!

I did it! The top was reached and I was so happy. I heard a voices from below congratulating me but then reminded me that I still had to come down. Gulp!

Feet are nearly back on the ground

I had such a good time and feel amazing that I did it. That’s one more step out of my comfort zone and I’m so proud of myself *pats self on back*
